Impressionism: American Gardens on Canvas will be the focus of a new exhibition soon to open at the New York Botanical Garden. Visitors to the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory will be able to wander through a garden like those that influenced iconic artists such as Childe Hassam and John Singer Sargent. As well, a complementary display of more than 20 paintings and sculptures by these famed artists and their contemporaries will be on view in the LuEsther T. Mertz Library's Art Gallery.

Far from any interest in photographic realism, American Impressionism is a style of painting characterized by loose, broken brushstrokes, with the goal of capturing an impression of a scene, the colors, shadows, and ephemeral quality of light observed in the natural world.

Impressionism: American Gardens on Canvas opens to the public on Saturday, 14 May.
